Welo Goal Sends Eagles Past Indians 1-0

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men's soccer team (5-4-1, 3-1-1 South Atlantic Conference) got back on the winning track with a 1-0 victory over the Catawba Indians (6-3-3, 1-1-3 South Atlantic Conference) on Saturday night at McCown Field.

Junior forward Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) scored the match's lone goal, as he took a cross from senior forward Taylor Jolley (Morristown, Tenn.) in the 30th minute mark of the first period to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead, which would be the final score.

"Credit to Catawba, they came hard at us," said Carson-Newman head coach Richard Moodie. "We've said it before that we're a one-nil team, and defensively we managed to lock them down and get away with a win."

Welo has now scored four goals this season, and he now leads Carson-Newman in scoring for the 2012 season.

"He makes things work for us," said Moodie. "Things start clicking for us when he's on the field. We seem to be scoring goals when he's on the field."

The loss ends an eight-match unbeaten streak for Catawba, who had won three in a row and had not lost since Sept. 5. The win is Carson-Newman's first since a Sept. 19 win against Lincoln Memorial.

The Eagles outshot the Indians 16-12 in the match, as Carson-Newman made 11 shots in the second period.

Junior goalkeeper Rumwald Le Gueval (Vannes, France) picked up the shutout victory. In 90 minutes between the posts, he didn't allow any goals and collected three saves in his third shutout victory this season.

"He played well," said Moodie on Le Gueval's performance. "He's done well and has been very consistent."

Catawba goalkeeper Frankie Cardelle allowed only the Welo goal while also getting three saves as he worked the entire match between the posts.

Carson-Newman will next play on Wednesday Oct. 10 at Brevard at 4:30 p.m. Carson-Newman's next home match at McCown Field will be on Oct. 20 against Anderson at 7 p.m.
