Welo Goal Sends Eagles Past Wolves 1-0

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Carson-Newman Eagles (3-2) began South Atlantic Conference play with a 1-0 victory over the Newberry Wolves (2-3) at NC Soccer Field on Saturday evening.

Junior midfielder Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) scored the lone goal for the Eagles in the 35th minute mark of the first period, a goal that would prove the difference as goalkeeper Rumwald Le Guevel (Vannes, France) picked up his second straight shutout victory.

"What a fantastic game," said Moodie. "Great team performance, very happy with the improvement. I'm still waiting on the floodgates to open up for us, but we looked good today and we're very dangerous."

Welo scored from inside 18 feet as his shot went past the diving Newberry goalkeeper Patrick Sweatt for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.

Welo's performance comes on the heels of his play last weekend against Shorter and Lees-McRae where he was named to the Stanno All-Tournament Team in Greeneville, Tenn.

With back-to-back shutouts, goalkeeper Le Guevel has now not allowed a goal in the past 201 minutes and six seconds of action on the pitch. Against Newberry Le Guevel collected two saves, as the Wolves made only seven shots throughout the match.

"There's not one team that wouldn't want to have him," said Moodie on Le Guevel. "You've got to also factor in the back four (defenders), and in the back we're absolutely solid. Rumwald is a great keeper but a lot of credit has to go to the boys that stand there in front of him."

Carson-Newman outshot Newberry 24-7 in the match, as the Eagles made eight shots on goal. Welo led the way with shots on goal with three.

"I feel like we've got a great group of guys and we're yet to see our best soccer from some of them this season," said Moodie.

Carson-Newman will next play on Wednesday Sept. 19 at home against Lincoln Memorial at 7:30 p.m. at McCown Field. This will mark the first home match for the men's soccer team this season, and the match will follow the women's match against LMU that begins at 5 p.m. Live match audio will be available on www.cneagles.com.
