Eagles fall to LMU 1-0 in overtime in SAC Semifinals

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The second-seeded Carson-Newman Eagles men's soccer team fell to the third-seeded Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters in overtime 1-0 in the semifinals of the 2012 Food Lion SAC Soccer Championship at Mancester Meadows on Friday night.

The match was scoreless through regulation, forcing overtime where LMU would pick up a golden goal in the 99th minute from Diego Deschmap on an assist by Mario Pinto to end Carson-Newman's conference tournament run.

"Great performance but unfortunate to give up a goal with 50 seconds left in the first overtime," said Carson-Newman head coach Richard Moodie. "But I'm very proud of the boys and proud of the accomplishments of this team, getting back to the top. It's a tough one tonight, it could've gone either way."

The first period saw Lincoln Memorial outshoot Carson-Newman 10-8, yet neither team scored a goal. In the second period, the Eagles would outshoot the Railsplitters 7-5.

Through the regulation of 90 minutes, Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial were even with 15 shots.

While Carson-Newman would outshoot Lincoln Memorial 3-2 in overtime, the second shot for the Railsplitters proved to be the game-winner.

Pinto passed from the corner to the inside top of the penalty box, where Deschamp fired a shot past Carson-Newman goalkeeper Rumwald Le Guevel (Vannes, France) to send the Railsplitters to the SAC finals.

Le Guevel took the loss, making six saves while allowing the one goal. LMU goalkeeper Marcel Barwanietz earned the shutout victory, not allowing a goal while collecting four saves.

All-SAC midfielder Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) was the only Eagle with multiple shots on goal with two, while All-SAC defender Trystan Dafydd (Y Felinheli, Gwynedd Wales) led Carson-Newman with four shots.

"This has been a great group of boys," said Moodie. "I'm certainly proud of all the seniors, all of them contributed so well. It's been a great year for us."

With the victory, LMU will now face fifth-seeded Anderson, who earlier Friday defeated first-seeded and regular season SAC champion Mars Hill 1-0.

The Eagles will await their postseason future with the 2012 NCAA Tournament Selection Show, which will air on Monday Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. ET on NCAA.com. If Carson-Newman is selected to the tournament field, full coverage and information will be available on www.cneagles.com.
