JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (2-7-3, 1-5-1 SAC) will aim to stay dominant against Newberry (3-6-1, 2-4-1 SAC) when the two squads meet at McCown Field tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m.
Carson-Newman is unbeaten all-time in its 30 meetings versus Newberry. Two of those contests ended in ties, most recently in 2018 in a game played at Newberry that finished in a 2-2 draw. Since then, C-N has won the past four matches, and has done so, outscoring the Wolves 10-3. Three of those four wins have seen Carson-Newman score three goals each. The Eagles have scored multiple goals in every home game they have played against the Wolves.
Carson-Newman is back at home and will close out October with back-to-back home matches versus Newberry and Wingate this week. The Eagles are 1-3-2 at home this season. All three losses at home have come consecutively.
The Eagles have success when getting off to good starts. Lyons' group has led at halftime in three matches and is 2-0-1. When scoring the first goal, C-N is 2-2-2 and has only lost five times in the past seven seasons when scoring the opening goal.
Mitchell Honcoop (Nieuw-Vennep, Netherlands) leads the offensive attack with a team-high four goals this season. The offense averages 12 shots per match and is the seventh-most accurate team in the SAC, with 43% of its shots on target. Honcoop and Antoine Torrent (Clermont Ferrand, France) are tied for the team-lead with three assists each. Isaac Pascal (Southend-on-Sea, England) and Maxime Wester (Brussel, Belgium) both have two assists as well. C-N has the fourth-most assists in the SAC.
The month of October has been much more pleasant for the Wolves. They began the season losing four of their first five matches and allowed 24 goals in those contests. Newberry has responded better in October, having won three of its five matches this month. It has a pair of 1-0 wins versus Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate for their two SAC wins.
Defeating Wingate on the road on Saturday night, it gave the Wolves their first road win of 2024. It was the program's first road win since August 31, 2022, when it won 1-0 at USC Aiken. Counting tomorrow's match, Newberry will play three of its final four games of the year on the road.
Newberry currently sits in ninth place in the South Atlantic Conference standings with a 2-4-1 mark. It is just two points away from seventh-place Wingate and Anderson.
Henok Awoke is Newberry's leading goal scorer with five this season. He has scored three times in conference play, two of which have been game-winners for Newberry's two SAC wins. The Wolves average just one goal per game, ranking toward the bottom of the league in shots and shots on goal as well.
Jacob Cotton has been tested often in goal for the Wolves this season. His 44 saves are second-most in the conference, averaging 4.50 per game. He has a goal against average mark at 2.90 and has saved 60% of the shots that have come toward goal. He has settled in nicely, with all three of his shutouts coming in his last seven starts.
