Eagles unable to top the Pioneers

GREENEVILL, Tenn. – Carson-Newman women's tennis falls to the Pioneers 6-1 in Greeneville, Tenn. on Wednesday.

"I was disappointed in the way we started doubles," Coach Jim Frederick said. "Ana Carla tied up the girls match, and we were up at No. 3 and No. 5 before losing."

After doubles the Eagles found themselves behind 1-0. At No. 1, Ana Carla Resende (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) fell to sisters Annie and Caitlin McCullough 6-2. At No. 2 Hannah Price (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Abby Reis (Des Moines, IA) were defeated by Julia Lopez and Africa Mota with the same score, 6-2. At No. 3 the score was only different by one game as Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) and Klara Vuckovic (Germany) dropped their match against Emilie Hansen and Brittani Brooks 6-3.

In singles competition, Resende was the only one that could muster a win as she defeated Hansen 6-2, 6-1 to tie the match at 1-1.

After that the match went South as the Eagles were unable to secure another win for the rest of the day. At No. 2, Harris fell to A. McCullough 6-1, 6-2 and Liashova dropped her match at No. 4 to Lopez 6-2, 6-3. Price lost her first set pretty quickly to C. McCullough 6-1 and almost fought back in the second but just narrowly fell 7-5 at No. 3.

Things looked to be going smoothly for Reis in her match at No. 5 singles as she won the first set 6-3. However, Mota came back and won the next two sets 6-1 and 6-2. Vuckovic was unable to come out on top against Martina Marras as she fell 6-1, 6-3.

The Eagles will be back in action Saturday away at Coker and the match will begin at 11 a.m.
