Back to back home matches ahead for the Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Women's tennis has a heavy week of play ahead as they brush off their recent loss to Catawba and prepare to face Anderson University (S.C.) on Tuesday and the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) on Wednesday at Mossy Creek.

"I told the girls after Saturday that I still think we were the better team," Coach Jim Frederick said. "The secret to a good team is after you play like that to come back and play better. If you let yourself play like that again, that's a problem."

The ladies fell to Catawba just a couple days ago on the road. After winning the doubles point, they were unable to carry the momentum into singles play and freshman Ana Carla Resende (Minas Gerais, Brazil) was the only Eagle to get a win improving her overall record to 9-3. With the team record now at 7-7 overall and 4-3 in coference play, Tuesday's contest against Anderson is important for the Eagles as they are working to move up in league standings heading into the post season.

"We're still fighting for that fourth or fifth seed," Coach Frederick said. "That to me is huge, we've got to be four or five to have a chance of getting to the final four. It's crunch time, we've got two weeks to go in the season."

Currently the Eagles are sitting at the fifth spot just behind Lenoir-Rhyne, who they take on Saturday. Anderson is sitting at the No. 8 position with a 10-6, 2-4 SAC record. The Trojans have been consistent in their play over the past few years and the Eagles have only been able to grab a win in one of the last four meetings. Last season the Eagles were just within arms reach of Anderson but fell 5-4 with the deciding match up to Klara Vuckovic (Germany) in the No. 6 position.

Match play will begin on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex at Mossy Creek.

Following Tuesday, the Eagles will take on the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) in a non-conference match also at home. Ranked 20th in the NAIA Coaches' Poll, the Patriots are 7-4 so far this season. The Eagles have gone 4-3 against the squad over the past nine years with their last win against the Trojans being in 2016 when they came out on top 7-2.

The match on Wednesday will begin at 2:00 p.m. For more information, updates and results check back on cneagles.com.
