JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman women's tennis (5-5) puts together solid performance against the Newberry Wolves (10-5) winning 6-1 Sunday at Mossy Creek.
"They're playing better and better," Head Coach Jim Frederick said. "We played Queens who is a top 15 team in the country, and we were right there. Two weeks ago, we played North Georgia who is 13thin the country and we were right there. So, we're getting better, we've just got to keep it going."
The ladies handled the doubles with ease as Ana Carla Resende (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) defeated Marta Gomar and Frederike Klein 6-4 at No. 1. Hanna Price (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Abby Reis (Des moines, IA) came out on top against Lucy Spice and Amy Griffiths with the same score at the No. 2 position to secure the doubles point. Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) and Klara Vuckovic (Germany) finished out the doubles competition with a win over Elisa Aguirre and Lucia Davila 6-3.
Rolling right into singles the Eagles didn't miss a beat. Resende was on and off the court in no time defeating Aguirre 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to take the score to 2-0 in favor of C-N. Reis played at the No. 5 position and defeated Gumar 6-2, 6-3 stretching the lead to 3-0 with the Eagles just one-point shy of taking the match.
The final point to win the match came with Price defeating Spice 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3. Liashova played just an eight-game pro set and notched a win against Griffiths 8-3. Harris saw the only loss of the day in her match against Klein falling 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 while Vuckovic finished the day for the Eagles taking down Madison Conwell 8-2 at No. 6.
"We just need to keep doing what we're doing," Frederick said. "I think we're getting over the fear of big moments, that's a huge thing. We've just got to get to the point where when we get over the fear, we win the points and games and make the shots that we need to make."
