Eagles fall to the Mocs on road trip

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Eagles could only muster one singles win in their match at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga Tuesday falling 6-1 to the Mocs.

Ana Carla Resend (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) won their doubles match at No. 1 6-3 against Delaney Edwards and Emma Van Hee of Chattanooga to give the Eagles an edge. However, Hannah Price (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Abby Reis (Des Moines, IA) were the duo at the No. 2 spot Frederick mentioned and despite getting a lead in their match they ended up falling 7-5 to Annie Tarwater and Bogdona Zaporozhets. The Eagles still had a chance to earn the doubles point at No. 3 doubles with Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) and Klara Vuckovic (Germany). Unfortunately, the two competed well but couldn't close the match and fell to Polina Goloputova and Caroline Hall 7-5.

"We almost had the doubles point," Coach Jim Frederick said of the match. "We were up 5-1 at No. 2 doubles but just couldn't finish the match."

The only singles win came from the freshman from Brazil, Resende as she handily defeated Zaporozhets 6-0, 6-2.

"Ana Carla played great," Frederick said. "She's getting better and better every match."

The rest of the Eagles struggled to follow her steps in the rest of singles competition. Price was the only other that came close to clinching a set on the Mocs at No. 3 singles as she battled to a 7-5 finish in her first set but came up short. She lost the second set 6-4. Harris was defeated by Goloputova 6-1, 6-1at No. 2 and Liashova fell to Edwards 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4. Rounding out the competition for the Eagles at No. 5 and No. 6 were Reis and Vuckovic. Both fell in similar fashion to Van Hee and Anna Didkovskaya, the former 6-1, 6-2 and the latter 6-1, 6-0.

"Hannah served for the first set, and Alisa let her doubles loss affect her singles," Frederick said. "We must get tougher."

The Eagles will hit the practice courts again for the next ten days as they prepare for their first match actually at Mossy Creek on Feb. 28 against Tennessee Wesleyan at 1 p.m. For more information and updates check back on cneagles.com.
