JACKSON, Tenn. – Carson-Newman completed the backdoor sweep over hosts Union (Tenn.) at the Union University Volleyball Classic, taking the match 3-1 behind a 50-assist game from Blair Cherry.
The weekend belonged to the freshmen outsides as Annie Dziczkowksi, Emerson Ahsmuhs, and Maddie Hurst all led a game in kills with Hurst collecting 19 on Saturday afternoon. Adding on to Blair's 50 assists, she added ten digs to complete her second double-double of the weekend.
"[The freshmen] are good," Carson-Newman volleyball head coach Cat Collins said. "They all did great, under pressure, against every opponent; it was great."
First Set (25-22, UU)
The Eagles (2-1) had their work cut out for them after two five-set games on Friday, and it didn't come easy as the Bulldogs (0-3) took the first set of the match using a long 7-0 scoring run to hold off C-N to take the early 1-0 set lead.
Second Set (25-23, C-N)
Carson-Newman battled back and took a commanding lead in the second set, leading by as many as nine points before Union stormed back with an 8-0 run to bring the set within one late. After a C-N timeout, a Maddie Hurst kill ended the set, bringing the match score even.
Third Set (25-18, C-N)
The third set was all Eagles, as they only trailed the set by one early on before opening up the scoring and taking the set out from underneath the tournament hosts' feet.
Fourth Set (25-21, C-N)
On the ropes, the Bulldogs battled back against the pesky Eagles, as neither team put together a scoring run longer than three points early on. However, with Union leading 14-13, the Eagles went on a 7-1 run to force the Bulldogs' head coach to call timeout. The Bulldogs made it close, but the Eagles held on for the victory.
Carson-Newman returns to the court at Holt Fieldhouse to take on Lincoln Memorial on Sept. 10 at 7:00 PM in the SAC and home opener.
