JEFFERSON CIT, Tenn. – Carson-Newman head football coach Mike Turner said he was pleased with his team's business-like efforts following the team's second preseason  scrimmage Saturday morning at Burke-Tarr Stadium. 

"I was so proud of the way the kids handled themselves today," head football coach Mike Turner said. "We did a full speed deal that was limited. I'm really excited about their attitude and effort. They want to keep the dream alive, and their vision toward that dream is good." 

The situational scrimmage featured Carson-Newman's first-team offense going against the second-team defense and vice versa, on a series of drives beginning at the offense's 35-yard line. 

The first-team offense scored on the very first play of the scrimmage, when Toot Johnson (Rincon, Ga.) took an option pitch 65 yards to the house.  The first-team offense also scored when Derrick Evans (Macon, Ga.) dropped a 32-yard dime to Braxton Westfield (Simpsonville, S.C.). 

The first-team defense stymied the second-team offense each time it had the ball.  

"You should have a business-like approach when you have a vision," Turner said. "If you have that vision locked in, there shouldn't be those highs and lows. If you go about your business and keep your vision, you can't work to be great and never fail."

Carson-Newman opens  the season Sept. 5 under the lights of Burke-Tarr Stadium against West Florida at 7 p.m.
