JEFFRSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman head football coach Mike Clowney has announced the hiring of two former SAC football players as the newest assistant coaches for the Eagles' football program.

Johnson Jamison returns to his alma mater as assistant linebackers coach after a stint as an assistant coach at Jefferson County High School.

"Johnson is like a son to me," Clowney said. "I recruited him out of high school. He's been a great defensive coordinator over at Jeff County the last couple years.  He's a great mix of a guy who has some skill who's been out coaching for the last couple years, but also has a drive and a hunger to learn."

Meanwhile former Lenoir-Rhyne All-American offensive lineman and three-time Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner Joe Ray will join fellow Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner Kevin Day as the Eagles' new assistant offensive line coach.

"Joe has been really great to have on our staff," Clowney said. "Joe brings the element of someone who we are familiar with while bringing in someone who played for an opponent we are familiar with. He brings in fresh ideas as to what our perception is on the outside and where we need to go."

Jamison made 32 tackles in his two-year career as a member of Carson-Newman's defensive line.  He was a part of the 2012 C-N football team that made an appearance in the regional finals before losing to Valdosta State.

As a player, his top game came in 2014 as a senior in the Eagles' opener against Edinboro.  He registered five tackles with a sack and two tackles for loss.

Ray helped the Bears to a trio of South Atlantic Conference championships.  He owned a 4-2 record in his career against the Eagles.

He was a three-time All-American and three-rime winner of the SAC's Jacobs Blocking trophy.

The Bears averaged 386 yards rushing per game with Ray on the offensive line.  The 416.2 yards rushing per game that L-R put up in Ray's junior season registers as an NCAA Division II record.
