Day, Fairell captain Carson-Newman football all-decade team

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Former Rimington Award winning center Kevin Day and All-American defensive back Desmond Fairell were selected as the team captains for Carson-Newman football's all-decade team, releases Tuesday afternoon by the Carson-Newman Athletic Communications Office.

Carson-Newman made four trips to the NCAA playoffs in the 2010s, making the quarterfinals in 2012.  The Eagles were the winningest team in the state of Tennessee for the decade, going 74-40 for the 10-year period. Carson-Newman had the most wins for the decade and the highest winning percentage.

The All-Decade team was selected by Carson-Newman head football coaches Mike Clowney and Mike Turner; offensive line coach and consensus All-American Kevin Day, Director of Sports Medicine Mike Van Bruggen, Voice of the Eagles Adam Cavalier, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications Michael Wottreng, former C-N linebacker and current WNML radio personality Eric Cain and Morristown Citizen Tribune Sports Editor Adam Greene.  Clowney and Cavalier selected the captains.

Day and Fairell were two of five unanimous first-team choices from the committee.  Quarterback De'Andre Thomas and offensive lineman Robby Ignagni were the other two on the offense, while defensive tackle Brian Bembry made everyone's first team defense.

All told, the all-decade team features 19 All-Americans, including consensus All-Americans Day and Harlon Hill Trophy Finalist Andy Hibbett.  Of those 19 All-Americans, six come from the offensive line.

The four running backs selected - Hibbett, Antonio Wimbush, Brandon Baker and Tyron Douglas - combined to rush for 13,699 yards and 154 touchdowns in their Carson-Newman careers.

Carson-Newman starts a new decade Sept. 3 under the lights of Burke-Tarr Stadium against West Georgia at 7 p.m.
