NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman senior safety Major Williams has pulled in Tennessee Sportswriters Association state defensive player of the week honors, the organization announced Wednesday morning.

Williams turned in a 10-tackle, 0.5-sack, 0.5-tackle for loss performance in Carson-Newman's 31-28 overtime win over No. 24/23 Wingate Saturday.

He also forced a fumble on an impromptu two-point conversion attempt by the Bulldogs following a botched snap and returned the loose pigskin 85-yards for C-N's first defensive PAT in 3,893 days.  Additionally, he secured his sixth career turnover and fourth career pick, intercepting a Brooks Bentley pass in the second quarter.

The defensive player of the week award is Carson-Newman's first from the TSWA since Mekhi Brown was recognized after the Eagles' 21-17 loss to Mars Hill last season on Oct. 21.

This is Williams first career player of the week award for his defensive efforts.  He was named the SAC's special teams player of the week his sophomore season after returning a punt 86 yards for a score in the Eagles' regular season finale at Catawba.

Williams 10-tackle day is a career high.

He and the rest of the Eagles will be in action Saturday at 6 p.m. at Catawba.  Coverage on the Eagle Sports Network begins at 5 p.m. with the AEC Tailgate Show on Joy 620 (WRJZ-AM, Knoxville), MIX 105.5 (WSEV-FM, Sevierville) and online at cneagles.com/live.
