INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time since 2019, Carson-Newman is being considered for postseason play.
Carson-Newman is one of 10 teams from Super Region II, comprised of the South Atlantic Conference, Gulf South, CIAA and SIAC, featured in under consideration "ranking," released by the NCAA Monday evening.
The alphabetical listing is the first of three region rankings that the NCAA publicizes leading up to the NCAA playoffs. The rankings, which move to 1-10 next week, are the official poll utilized by the NCAA in the championship selection process and will continue to be released each week by the NCAA Division II Football Committee up to the NCAA Championship selections on Nov. 17.
With a .573 strength of schedule, Carson-Newman has the second-best mark in that category among the 10 teams listed. Only Winston-Salem State's .575 is higher.
Carson-Newman has a 27.429 performance indicator, a system that assigns values to game results depending on the site and the quality of the opponent, which is third in the region behind Johnson C. Smith (30.00) and Valdosta State (28.00).
C-N is 7-1 on the season, but 6-1 based on results under consideration by the committee. The Eagles' 50-7 win over NAIA Reinhardt to start the season does not factor into any deliberation. Johnson C. Smith and Valdosta State are the only two unbeaten teams in the listing.
Carson-Newman is 1-1 against teams under consideration in Super Region II with a win over Wingate and a loss to Emory & Henry.
