JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men's soccer team played for a full 110 minutes of action Saturday night against the University of South Carolina Aiken Pacers but neither team could find an advantage as the teams drew 1-1 on McCown Field.
The Eagles played to their first draw since facing Lincoln Memorial last season.
"They were a fantastic team first off. Both teams were kind of riddled with injuries so there was shifting around. We lost player after player and it's not the best situation to be in leading into conference play," coach Richard Moodie said. "They started building on the emotions with a couple of good chances and we couldn't really establish possession after that.
Carson-Newman opened the scoring in the 25th-minute with another goal for senior Nick Skoda (Knoxville, Tenn.). Senior Lucas Siqueira sent a cross from the right corner flag into the box that was headed by junior Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway); the cross pulled goalkeeper Andre Bernardini off his line leaving the net open for Skoda to score and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the half.
Skoda has four goals on the season, which leads the C-N team.
The Pacers answered with their goal in the 62nd-minute. Aiken took possession of the ball at the midfield line as Andre Simmond picked up the ball; Simmond combined with Nathan Shanko on the right wing for a give-and-go that set Simmond up in the middle of the box unmarked and he beat Eagle goalkeeper Kavi Luchowa (London, England) to tie the contest at 1-1.
In the overtime periods, Aiken tallied three shots, while the Eagles only registered one lone shot in the 20 minutes of play.
"Truthfully, I thought they deserved to win the game tonight to be honest with you. The boys never gave up on our part. We didn't ever roll over and accept defeat, but they had a couple of really good chances to seal the game off," Moodie said.
Luchowa recorded four saves on the day and now possesses a 0.67 goals against average in three games of play. Skoda led the team with three shots and junior Tom Read (London, England) was the only other Eagle to record multiple shots after the Englishman pulled off two shots. Senior Jarrel Smalls led the Pacers with four shots.
Carson-Newman opens South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday night against Lenior-Rhyne at 7:30 p.m. at McCown Field.
