JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Ten seniors will be honored on Saturday as the 13th-ranked Carson-Newman men's soccer team (11-2-1) host South Atlantic Conference foe, the Brevard Tornados (4-7-2, 4-3-2 SAC), for a Senior Night showdown at McCown Field at 7:30 p.m.
Seniors Kavi Luchowa (London, England), Stuart Oliver (Beverly, England), Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway), Nick Skoda (Knoxville, Tenn.), Jules Gabbiadini (York, England), James Ward (Trine Cornwell, England), Samuel Amure (London, England), Lucas Siqueira (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Rurik Pereira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Alexander White (Glasgow, Scotland) will all be recognized in between games during the doubleheader.
"It's been amazing. It's going to be an emotional one for me on Saturday. Some of these boys were some of the first recruits I signed as a head coach. They've been such an important part of this program and building the foundation," coach Richard Moodie said. "We had an ok first year where we got to the semifinal of the SAC Tournament; we've always finished top-three in the conference. In '13, we went to the national final. They've seen the highs and lows and everything in between. They've been instrumental in the foundation of this program."
Welo, Skoda, Siqueira and Pereira have all spent their last four seasons as a member of the Carson-Newman squad. Luchowa, Oliver, Ward, Amure and White are all in their second seasons in the Orange and Blue, while Gabbiadini is concluding his first season with C-N.
Luchowa has started every game this season in goal for the Eagles now has 27 starts in goal. He has a career goals against average of 1.65, which is the fourth-lowest in Carson-Newman history. Luchowa has tallied 104 saves and he has the fifth-most shutouts in the program's history with six.
Oliver has made 22 appearances for the Orange and Blue with a goal and an assist to his credit in two seasons. A defensive midfielder by trade, Oliver's lone goal of his career came on the road at Queens (N.C.) last season. He assisted Tom Read's (London, England) game-winning goal against Lincoln Memorial this season. Oliver has 11 career shots with four of those landing on frame.
Welo ranks sixth all-time with 26 career goals and his two penalty kicks is tied for fifth in the program's record books. He is on pace to break the school record for games played as Saturday night's appearance will be 72nd career game in the Blue and Orange, which will be three off the school record of 75. Welo is tied for sixth with 14 career assists, eighth with 66 career points and tied for sixth with six game-winning goals. He was named: second-team All-SAC as a freshman and first-team All-SAC and first-team All-Southeast region as a sophomore in 2013.
Skoda has spent his last four seasons with the Eagles after graduating from Hardin Valley Academy in Knoxville. He has eight career goals and three assists. Against Belmont Abbey on Sept. 9th, Skoda recorded his first-career hat trick and was named the SAC AstroTurf Player of the Week the following Monday. The Knoxville-native scored the game-winning goal against fourth-ranked Rollins in the 2013 NCAA quarterfinals and clinched the Eagles' ticked to the Final Four that season.
Gabbiadini transferred to C-N this season after playing the past three years for the Charleston (W. Va.) Golden Eagles where he made an appearance in the 2014 NCAA Championship game. For the Eagles, Gabbiadini scored the game-winning goal on the road at Mars Hill on Sept. 23rd with a strike in the 89th-minute; he also scored against Queens this season and tallied in that contest. Gabbiadini was named the Tennessee Sports Writer Association's Player of the Week for the entire state of Tennessee on Sept. 29th.
Ward has been a stone wall for the Carson-Newman defense the past two seasons. He's been known to, as he puts it, "head the ball really, really far" and his head has a knack for scoring goals with two headers for scores on the year against Lenoir-Rhyne and seventh-ranked Wingate last Saturday. On his career, he has four goals and an assist. This season, Ward has worn the armband as the Eagles' captain.
Amure has been a key in C-N's success the past two seasons and has been a leader on and off the field for the Eagles. He has made five appearances in the Orange and Blue and has won 18 matches and counting with Carson-Newman. Amure has a major role on Mossy Creek and has been known as a leader on campus.
Siqueira has tallied 11 career goals and seven assists in his four seasons with the Eagles. As a junior, he tied the Carson-Newman record with three made penalty kicks in a season and is tied for the school record in that category with his three made kicks. This season, Siqueria has scored against Alabama-Huntsville, Queens and Lees-Mcrae.
Pereira has scored six career goals and nine assists in his career. As a sophomore, Pereira appeared 22 of the 23 games Carson-Newman played en route to a National Championship game appearance. Last season, he scored in the SAC Tournament against rival Tusculum. Pereira 66 games played is the eighth-most in school history. Pereira has been named Honorable Mention All-SAC each of the last two seasons.
White is in his second season with the program and has appeared in 21 games during his time on Mossy Creek. A member of the back four, White's lone point in his career came on an assist to freshman Bruno Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) against Belmont Abbey this season. White has four shots in his career and owns a .250 shots on goal percentage.
Brevard enters the contest seventh in the conference with 14 points, while Carson-Newman is currently tied for second with 18. The Tornados have wins over Coker, Anderson (S.C.), Catawba and Newberry on the season and are led on offensive by Gabriel Garcia who has three goals and two assists.
