NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman senior midfielder Jules Gabbiadini (York, England) was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association's Player of the Week on Tuesday following his two game-winning goal week.
Gabbiadini scored the game-winning goal on the road against Mars Hill last Wednesday and added the eventual game-winner against Queens (N.C.) on Sunday; the goals were first two in his Carson-Newman career.
The Englishman's goal against Mars Hill came in the 89th-minute following a through-in from the right side and Gabbiadini one-timed his shot into the left corner of the net to push the Eagles ahead 4-3 for his first-career goal in the Blue and Orange.
In Sunday's match against the Royals, the senior struck just before the halftime break. Junior Tom Read (London, England) sent a low cross in from the left side of the field into the 18-yard box; the cross bounced through the box, off the head of junior forward Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) and landed at Gabbiadini's feet in the middle of the six-yard box and his right-footed shot found the middle of the wide-open net to give C-N a 2-0 lead.
Gabbiadini now has 18 collegiate goals spread over the course of three years of play at the University of Charleston (W. Va.) and five games on Mossy Creek. His honor from TSWA is his first of his career.
The Eagles play on Wednesday afternoon against Lees-McRae at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. at 3 p.m.
