NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After registering a goal and an assist last week, Carson-Newman senior defender Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) picked up his first Tennessee Sports Writer Association honor of the season, the TSWA announced on Wednesday.
On Tuesday night against the Tusculum Pioneers, Welo assisted the first goal of the contest in the 50th-minute. Welo took a pass from James Ward (Trine Cornwell, England) and shot at the net; Tusculum's goalkeeper saved Welo's shot, but senior Rurik Pereira (Rio da Janeiro, Brazil) cleaned up the rebound to put the Eagles up 1-0.
Carson-Newman went on to win the match over its rival 2-1.
Against the Cobras, Welo converted his third penalty kick of the season in the 75th-minute for the lone goal of the contest. Welo's three spot kicks ties him for the school record for penalty kicks made. Welo's score clinched Carson-Newman a share of the regular season South Atlantic Conference championship, which was the program's first since 2010.
Welo has eight goals and an assist on the season. Earlier Wednesday, the Norwegian was named to the SAC's first-team and has already been named CoSIDA Academic All-District.
Welo and the Eagles next take to the pitch on Friday morning at 11 a.m. as one-seed C-N plays the Queens (N.C.) Royals at Manchester Meadow in Rock Hill, S.C. in the SAC Tournament semifinals.
