SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Three goals in the last 15 minutes of the first half ended the Carson-Newman men's soccer team (6-2-1, 3-2 SAC) win streak at four games with a 3-2 loss to the Anderson (S.C.) Trojans (4-4-1, 3-2 SAC) Saturday afternoon at the Spartanburg Upward Stars Center.
The Trojans sandwiched the Eagles' goals with scores in the 33rd, 37th and 45th minutes to move into a tie with C-N for third in the South Atlantic Conference.
"Individual errors led to the loss. A last minute push wasn't enough to recover from our 3-1 halftime deficit," coach Richard Moodie said.
Senior Sindre Welo (Trondheim, Norway) tallied the first score of the contest in the 16th-minute. Junior Tom Read (London, England) sent a free kick into the Anderson box that Welo bicycle-kicked into the bottom right corner of the goal under the hand of the outstretched Devon Ashy for a 1-0 lead.
Andre Carle scored his first of two goals in the 33rd-minute after a long run down the left side after a pass from Lars Kaula. Carle's goal was the first shot recorded by the Trojans.
Kaula added the second goal in five minutes with a penalty kick after a Carson-Newman foul in its own box. Kaula went to his right to score and put Anderson up 2-1.
In the 45th-minute, Carle added his second goal in the half and tallied the eventual game-winner. Brad Du Plooy sent a through ball through the left side of the box to Carle's feet and he beat goalkeeper Kavi Luchowa (London, England) to put AU up 3-1 at the half.
Carson-Newman controlled most of the play in the second half. In the 74th-minute, the Eagles were able to pull a goal back thanks to senior Poly Avgousti (Paphos, Cyprus) after a corner kick from freshman Bruno Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Andrade whipped his cross towards the far post and Avgousti one-timed his shot past Ashy to cut the Trojans lead to 3-2.
C-N recorded three shots down the stretch but could not find the equalizer.
Welo now has 22 career goals in the Orange and Blue, which is tied for seventh with Kyle Izzard. Avgousti's goal was his second of the year.
Carson-Newman outshot Anderson 13 to nine with nine shots coming in the final 45 minutes of play. The Eagles are now 5-2 when outshooting their opponent. Avgousti and Andrade each had two shots for C-N.
