JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men's soccer team (2-1-1, 0-1 SAC) will look to get back on its winning ways after going winless in the Eagles' last two contests as the Newberry Wolves (1-3) come to McCown Field for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday night for a South Atlantic Conference contest.
Carson-Newman has never lost to the Wolves and the Eagles have won the last 13 games in the series. Last season, C-N picked up the 7-3 win over Newberry in the Palmetto State with goals being scored by James Ward (Trine Cornwell, England), Lucas Siqueira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Marius Staalby (Trondheim, Norway) who will play in Saturday's match.
"I don't care who we play on Saturday. I think for the boys, they need to regroup and refocus. We played well for the first 20 minutes against L-R and I think we had it in the bag and so often, you see teams go up early and then they lose control of the game and they end up losing. For us, I think it happens too often in a game for us to have any excuses," coach Richard Moodie said. "The boys are the reason for the last two games we haven't been able win. We have to regroup. It's a great group we have."
C-N opened the year with two wins over Alabama-Huntsville and Belmont Abbey before a tie with South Carolina Aiken and a loss to Lenoir-Rhyne to begin SAC play slowed the Eagles' momentum; in the two wins, the team has tallied eight goals but in the loss and tie, C-N has only found the back of the net three times.
Freshman Bruno Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has been a spark off the bench for Carson-Newman. Andrade has a goal and an assist on the season in just 166 minutes of action. The Brazilian played a pivotal role in the Eagles' 5-0 win over Belmont Abbey where he registered his first career goal and assist in the victory.
"He's class. I love Bruno. He's a player we will look to carry the program forward when we graduate all these seniors. He will score goals this year, no doubt; he's not done. He's a huge signing for us. He's a player who could play at the next level. When he comes in, he is full of confidence. He's the first player on the training ground and he's the last person to leave. He's there all the time. He's a great footballer; he has a great soccer I.Q.," Moodie said.
Newberry has scored one goal on the season, which came in the team's lone win of the year over North Greenville; Davis Bryan is the lone Wolf to score in 2015. The Wolves have tallied 38 shots and average 9.5 shots per game. Brad Dixon is the first-team keeper for coach Barry Slagle; Dixon has allowed eight goals on the year while recording nine saves. Slagle is in fourth season leading the pack and has compiled an 11-42-2 record.
Carson-Newman and Newberry play at 7:30 p.m. on the Eagle Sports Network and a full rundown will be available on cneagles.com following the match.
