No. 14 Eagles move to second in Southeast region

INDIANAPOLIS – Four days after clinching a share of the program's ninth South Atlantic Conference regular season title and the first since 2010, the 14th-ranked Carson-Newman men's soccer team moved up a spot to second in the next-to-last Southeast regional rankings put out by the NCAA on Wednesday.

Last week, the Eagles knocked off longtime rival Tusculum 2-1 and Coker 1-0 to move into a tie with the Wingate Bulldogs for the conference title.

The top six teams make the NCAA Division II Playoffs from the South Atlantic Conference, Peach Belt and Conference Carolinas, although no team can clinch an automatic qualifying bid via a tournament championship.

The Pfeiffer Falcons remained as the region's top-team with on the road at Catawba of the SAC and Southern Wesleyan; each contest ended in a 4-1 win for the Falcons. C-N sits second with a record of 14-2-1, although the Eagles' 4-0 handling of Brevard in the SAC Tournament quarterfinals was not reflected in the rankings.

Young Harris moved from fourth to third after wins over Clayton State and Montevallo. The Mountain Lions shut out the Lakes 2-0 and dismantled the Falcons 3-1. The Lander Bearcats fell from second in the region to fourth after a 2-0 win at North Georgia and a 1-1 draw with Francis Marion on the Bearcats' home pitch.

Wingate remained in fifth in the region, although the Bulldogs lost to Tusculum 1-0 in double-overtime in each team's regular season finale. The match against the Pioneers in Greeneville, Tenn. was Wingate's lone action of the week. The Limestone Saints jumped from eighth to sixth with two road victories. The Saints traveled to Hickory, N.C. and beat Lenoir-Rhyne 4-3 and followed that with a 2-1 win over Belmont Abbey in the regular season finale.

Lincoln Memorial held steady in seventh with a record of 10-3-1, although the Railsplitters are on the outside looking in for a spot in the NCAA Tournament. LMU beat the Catawba Indians 3-2 last Saturday in the final regular season contest for both programs and the 'Splitters defeated Tusculum in penalty kicks on Tuesday in the SAC Tournament quarterfinals to keep their postseason hopes alive. The Flagler Saints fell from sixth to eighth in the rankings after suffering a setback against Rollins as the Tars knocked off the Saints 4-0.

Carson-Newman next plays on Friday morning in the SAC Tournament semifinals as the Eagles face off with the Queens (N.C.) Royals at 11 a.m. at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C. as C-N seeks its first SAC Tournament title since 2005.
