VIDEO: Ben Young Interview

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Coming off a trip to Virginia Tech, Carson-Newman swimming gets back in action this Saturday, Oct 26. against Mars Hill beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The Eagles are 1-1 on the season entering the meet at Mars Hill this Saturday. In the first meet of the season at Emory & Henry, Carson-Newman took home the victory in a score of 261-104. The second meet of the season saw the Eagles travel to Division I Virginia Tech where the Eagles fell 287-212 to the Hokies.

"Virginia Tech was a fantastic meet for us," said head swim coach Ben Young. "Going into it, we focused on keeping up the energy throughout the entire meet. At the end of the day, it was an incredible meet for us and we had a lot of really fantastic swims and the future is bright."

Going on the road for the third straight meet to start the season, the Eagles look to bounce back against Mars Hill. In the meet at Mar Hill last season, Carson-Newman outscored the Lions 256-149.

"There's a little bit of history with Mars Hill," said Young. "We had a former graduate assistant now head coach at Mars Hill, so we're excited to see her. They continue to build that program which helps to push us. Going in there we're not worried about the win, but we're looking to go in a little bit broken down. The expectation stays the same, detailed oriented racing and making sure that we as a team make sure to carry the energy throughout the entire meet."

Ben Young preaches the importance of professionalism for all his swimmers, and he has been impressed with how the team approaches the meets so far this season.

"A lot of challenges accepted by the team and Virginia Tech was a great example of that," Young said. "They heard the challenge and they made sure that they came in and executed well. At the end of the day, we're going home feeling good about how the weekend went."

Young emphasizes the message of development to the team and looks to see swimmers push themselves to reach new heights.

"We're very up front with the swimmers when they come to Carson-Newman," said Young. "We want them to know that just because you are already fast, doesn't mean that you can't work to get faster. We believe that we can continue to develop athletes past where they are currently, that's why they are here."

Carson-Newman makes the trip to Mars Hill, N.C. to take on the Lions on Saturday, Oct. 26 beginning at 11:00 a.m.
