CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Carson-Newman men's tennis saw another tough competition on Wednesday, this time against the Lee Flames. The Eagles (1-3, 0-0 SAC) battled every match but ultimately fell to the Flames (2-2, 0-1 GSC) by a team score of 5-2.

"The boys could have and should have won the doubles point being up 4-2 in the matches, one in 3 sets and one after having 4 set points," head coach Jim Frederick stated. "They did fight and I'm very proud of that effort.

Sophomore Joshua Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) was a star for the Eagles. He was one of the lone Eagles to claim a singles victory by his score of 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 (10-6) at the no. 6 singles slot. He and teammate Marc Janse (Zeewolde, Netherlands) were not able to win in doubles as they fell 6-3 from the no. 3 slot.

Beyond Ott, grad student Julian Froehlich (Kobenz, Austria) was the only Eagle point-giver when he came away with a 6-2, 7-5 win from the no. 5 singles spot. Froehlich and junior Rintaro Oka (Narita, Japan) were defeated in no. 2 doubles by a score of 6-4. This gave the doubles point to Lee and from there, the Flames never turned down the fire.

Oka played no. 1 singles for the second straight match, but was once again not successful as he fell 7-5, 6-1. All other singles matches from no. 2 through no. 4 were all Flames victories and the closest was done by grad student Gabriel Dabdab (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) of C-N who battled but fell 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 at no. 5

Now, the Eagles look ahead to SAC play when they travel to Gaffney, S.C. on Saturday to face the Limestone Saints before opening up at home for the first time in 2021 on Sunday against UVA-Wise.
