Eagles claim first SAC victory of 2021

Final results

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Carson-Newman men's tennis (2-3, 1-0 SAC) had a mission and made sure to make it happen Saturday in Gaffney, S.C. The Eagles took to the courts against the Limestone Saints (1-2, 0-1 SAC) for a tough and gritty matchup. In the end, C-N came away with a 4-3 team victory to start SAC action on a high note.

Grad student Gabriel Dabdab (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) made sure to motivate his team on and off the court. He started off his day winning at no. 1 doubles alongside sophomore Ids Waterbolk (Bennekom, Netherlands) by a score of 7-6 (8-6). Dabdab continued his success by taking the no. 4 singles with a score of 6-2, 6-4. Meanwhile, Waterbolk was defeated at no. 3 singles by his opponent with a score of 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 in a three-set collision.

"The boys came back from two matches to none down and having lost the first three sets in the matches on the court," head coach Jim Frederick said. "However, they were able to eventually win two of those matches."  

Junior Rintaro Oka (Narita, Japan) played in no. 1 singles for the third straight match. On Saturday, he was the victor, taking it with a nail-biting score of 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-3). The other victories for C-N came from sophomore Marc Janse (Zeewolde, Netherlands) who won 6-1, 6-2 at no. 2 singles and grad student Julian Froehlich (Kobenz, Austria) who won 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4.  

Sophomore Joshua Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) played in no. 6 singles but fell 6-2, 6-1.

Eagles back in action next as they travel to Hartsville, S.C. for a top-notch conference battle with the Cobras of Coker.
