Eagles see SAC play start with matchup against Limestone

Video: Jim Frederick Interview

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The time has come for Carson-Newman men's tennis to leave the Volunteer State for the first time in 2021. The Eagles (1-3, 0-0 SAC) will look to begin their 2021 SAC matches with a short travel to Gaffney, S.C. on Saturday to face the Limestone Saints (1-1, 0-0 SAC).

Carson-Newman men's tennis last was in action this past Wednesday when they travelled to Cleveland, Tenn. and saw a tough 5-2 defeat. Sophomore Joshua Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) was the lone Eagle to win both his singles and doubles matches against the Flames. He and the rest of the team will look to push across their second overall win and first SAC win on the season.

"Our men being able to defeat a Division I opponent speaks volume for this team," head coach Jim Frederick said. "The men are playing tough and gritty this year."

This marks the first time the Eagles and Saints will battle since October 2013 when Limestone came away with the 5-0 victory from Hickory, N.C. Last season, the Saints went 2-2, ending the season with a 6-1 loss to the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb. Saturday will be the fourth 2021 match for Limestone, coming off a Feb. 23rd battle which fell 4-3 in favor of Emmanuel.

"I think this is a weekend we're all excited for and been waiting to get started," Frederick said. "I don't think the trip will be any different than other road trips so far. We're just going to have the same mindset prior to every match and go out to show our level of play."

Opening serve from the Emmie Evans Rector Tennis Center is set for 2:00 p.m. against the Saints. Be sure to keep up with all things Carson-Newman tennis at cneagles.com and on social media.
