Janse ties program record as C-N sweeps UVA Wise

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.  Carson-Newman (7-9, 5-5 SAC) welcomed the UVA Cavs to wrap up a three-match home stand on Tuesday. The Eagles were once again led by sophomore Marc Janse (Zeewolde, Netherlands) who continued his hot start to 2021.

For the first time in a while, Janse played singles from the number one singles slot but it did not make a difference as he moves to 10-0 against SAC opponents and tied the C-N record for single season wins with his 12th in 2021. The sophomore took home a 6-0, 7-5 result on Tuesday as he and the rest of the Eagles combined to sweep UVA Wise 7-0.

"This was more like weather to swim in, not play tennis," said Janse. "That second set was rough and I'm glad I was able to compose myself to win once again. I had a tough match against Queens on Saturday so being able to "calmly" win helps me for the remaining season."

This is the first time since 2012 that an Eagle has started 10-0 in SAC play and if Janse wins one more match in 2021, he will become the single-season record holder for most singles victories by an Eagle.

Janse started off his day alongside junior Rintaro Oka (Narita, Japan) as the duo played number two doubles to a result of 6-0. This was one of two 6-0 results for C-N doubles as grad student Julian Froehlich (Kobenz, Austria) and sophomore Joshua Ott (Knoxville, Tenn.) also swept their opposition. The other doubles pairing of grad student Gabriel Dabdab (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and sophomore Ids Waterbolk (Bennekom, Netherlands) were victorious, but it took a 6-3 result to gather the win and doubles point for C-N.

Four out of the remaining five singles matches beyond Janse's result ended in two sets. Oka moved down a spot and played in number two singles which he was able to claim his second sweep of a Cav as he won 6-0, 6-0. Waterbolk played from his number three singles spot (as usual) and dominated his opponent to the tune of a 6-2, 6-0 result.

Dabdab continued his winning ways on Tuesday when he took to the courts as number four singles. He started off the match not dropping a point until the third set. He finished off the win by a 6-0, 6-0 decision. He is now still third-most all time but moves to 28-41 all-time as an Eagle in his proposed last home match.

Froehlich continued the success for C-N as he claimed a 6-2, 6-0 decision at number five singles. Froehlich is 7-9 in singles this year while 4-11 in doubles play alongside Ott. Ott was the last match to conclude as he and his Cavs opposition played a "pro set" in which Ott claimed the 8-5 victory.

The Eagles will look to continue their winning ways as they travel to Greeneville on Thursday for a matchup with the Tusculum Pioneers. Be sure to keep up with all things Carson-Newman men's tennis at cneagles.com and via all social media accounts.
