Game Highlights

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women's soccer team (4-1, 2-0 SAC) used a goal in the 74th-minute from the foot of junior forward Julianne Herrity (Donegal, Ireland) to push past the Newberry Wolves (0-4-2, 0-2 SAC) for the Eagles first 2-0 start in the South Atlantic Conference since 2009.

Carson-Newman knocked off Newberry for the first time since 2010, which ended a four-game losing streak to the Wolves.

Carson-Newman scored two goals before the 50th-minute mark, but two Newberry goals in the span of five minutes and three minutes that required Herrity's game-winner.

"I'm excited for the girls. They deserved it. We played well but we need to wok on winning without conceding. We gave up a few sloppy girls in the second half," assistant coach Sarah Tompkins said. "Overall, a great team effort and we need to step it up for the next game."

Junior Gabrielle Gianeselli (Knoxville, Tenn.) tallied the first goal of the game in the 27th-minute. Freshman Averi Wiliams (Powell, Tenn.) sent a corner kick from the left flag post towards the back post where junior Megan Peterson (Parrish, Fla.) headed the ball back towards the near post. Gianeselli fought with a Newberry defender at the post and then the junior won the ball and knocked it into the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the halftime break.

Carson-Newman tacked on a goal again in the 50th-minute as Herrity scored her first of two goals in the game. Freshman Varin Ness (Sogndal, Norway) sent a corner into the box where Peterson headed towards the net and Herrity sent it in to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Newberry responded quickly. Senior Michelle Calmeyn took a misplayed clearance by a Carson-Newman defender and beat freshman goalkeeper Jessica Fraiture (Hebron, Ky.) to her left and cut the lead to 2-1 in the 57th-minute.

Five minutes later, Calmeyrn tied the game with a header from a Sara Silvestro corner. Calmeyrn was unmarked in the box and easily beat Fraiture right down the middle of the net for a 2-2 score line.

After the second Newberry goal, Carson-Newman was the team to carry the fight. Shot after shot was taken towards Wolves' goalkeeper Alexis Carillo before Herrity scored the game-winner. Junior Elissa Lane (Knoxville, Tenn.) sent a low cross from the right sideline that bounced through the box to the feet of Herrity. The Irishwoman turned back into the box and pulled a shot to the left post and found the back of the net for the 3-2 Eagle lead.

Carson-Newman outshot Newberry 27 to 11 and the Eagles recorded eight corners compared to two for the Wolves. Herrity led the C-N with six shots, which she put four on frame, and Ness tallied five shots. Newberry was lead by Guadalupe Magana who had four shots.

The Eagles now hit the road for the first time in 2015 as they travel to face the Mars Hill Lions on Wednesday night at 5 p.m.
