SAC title number seven clinched for Eagles

ROCK HILL, S.C. – By virtue of Wingate and Tusculum's scoreless draw on Friday night in Greeneville, Tenn., the 15th-ranked Carson-Newman women's soccer team clinched its first South Atlantic Conference title since 2010 and the program's first outright title since 2009.

Carson-Newman has 27 points prior to Saturday's contest at Coker, while Wingate finishes the regular season with two scoreless draws and 26 points.  No one else in the league has more than 22 points.

C-N now has the most regular season titles in the SAC with seven. Presbyterian and Elon each have six titles, but the Blue Hose and Phoenix are both members of Division I currently.

While the conference title is secured, the Eagles still have plenty to play for against the Cobras on Saturday. C-N needs two goals to tie and three scores to break Wingate's 31 regular season conference goals mark that is the benchmark for the conference dating back to 2012.

A win could cap the SAC's best turnaround in conference history. Carson-Newman finished 1-10 in league play a season ago and needs one win to tie the league record of 10 conference wins in a season.

The Eagles are now guaranteed the one-seed in the SAC Tournament and a home match on Tuesday in the tournament quarterfinals. C-N's opponent has yet to be determined.

Carson-Newman concludes the regular season on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Coker Soccer Complex against the Cobras.
