Herrity tabbed TSWA Player of the Week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman junior forward Julianne Herrity's (Donegal, Ireland) was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association's Player of the Week by the league on Tuesday after leading the Eagles with three goals to their first 2-0 start in league play for the first time since 2009.

Herrity's accolade is added to her South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week honor given on Monday and her Women Play Ball Player of the Week award given earlier Tuesday.

"It means a lot to me. It's great to get recognized; it's also great for us as a team to get recognized after being predicted ninth in the conference and hopefully this has put us on the map," Herrity said.

Herrity opened her week with her first of two game-winning goals in the 103rd-minute as the Eagles' upset No. 13 Lenoir-Rhyne in double overtime; the junior recorded three shots on Wednesday.

"We had a chance just before (the game-winner). Holly (Talbut-Smith) got put through but just unfortunate to not take that and we got in again and Holly set it off to me and the ball just dropped perfectly for me and I took it and it went in. It was a great feeling," Herrity said.

On Saturday against Newberry, Herrity tallied two goals, her first multi-goal game of her career, on six shots. Herrity's first goal of the game game came off a header in the 50th-minute that was assisted by junior Megan Peterson (Parrish, Fla.) and freshman Averi Williams (Knoxville, Tenn.).

Herrity added her second game-winner of the week with a low shot to the left post after junior Elissa Lane's (Knoxville, Tenn.) low cross bounced through the box and landed at Herrity's feet.

"It's great for us and it's a great boost for the them, but we are still not where we want to be right now," Herrity said of the team start in the SAC. "The way we are playing, we believe we can still do a lot better, not conceding goals and taking more chances, because our shots compared to our scoring is still not good enough. We are happy where we are now but it's got to be better."

Second-place Carson-Newman travels to Mars Hill, N.C. for a match with the Lions on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m.
