Herrity’s goal gives Eagles 2-1 double-overtime win over Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Junior Julianne Herrity (Donegal, Ireland) scored in the 103rd-minute in double-overtime to give the Carson-Newman women's soccer team (10-2) a 2-1 nonconference road victory over the Young Harris Mountain Lions (3-7) Wednesday night at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.

Herrity struck early in the second overtime stanza as freshman Heida Ragney (Akureyri, Iceland) sent a pass into the 18-yard box that the junior was able to latch onto, shot and scored to give the Eagles their third-straight victory.

Carson-Newman's win was the 10th on the year, which is the first time the Eagles achieved the 10-win mark since 2010.

"The girls played really well. We fought hard. We outshot them 29 to five, if that is any indication of the game. It seemed like one of those nights where we could never get a goal you need. You play a lot of games like that and you just hope you don't lose. We picked up our 10th win for the first time since 2010," coach Richard Moodie said.

Young Harris struck first in the 14th-minute on a set piece. Midfielder Sydney Baird sent the corner to the right side of the box to the head of defender Amber Matthews who beat freshman goalkeeper Jessica Fraiture (Hebron, Ky.) to give the Mountain Lions a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles responded six minutes later. Herrity took a long ball sent from the Carson-Newman defensive-third and corralled the pass at the edge of the 18-yard box and made a run into the box and beat goalkeeper Arielle Charles into the left corner to tie the score at 1-1.

C-N outshot the Mountain Lions 11 to two in the second half and held possession for most of the 45 minutes of play, but could not beat Charles. The Eagles continued their offensive attack in the first overtime stanza as they outshot Young Harris seven to nothing.

The Eagles struck the game-winner three minutes into the second overtime period for the victory. The junior now has two game-winners in double overtime as she gave the Eagles a 3-2 win over then No. 13 Lenoir-Rhyne in September.

Herrity led the contest with 10 shots, while freshman Varin Ness (Sogndal, Iceland) tallied five attempts on net. Herrity is the first Eagle with at least 10 shots in a contest since Trenna Howell had 17 shots on Aug. 31st, 2011 against Chowan.

Fraiture recorded her 10th win of the season with two saves and one goal against in 102-plus minutes of play. Charles conceded two goals and made 10 saves in a losing effort.

The Eagles return to McCown Field for the first time since Sept. 27th as they host the No. 9 Wingate Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
