Eagles move to top spot in Southeast region

INDIANAPOLIS – The South Atlantic Conference regular season champions and 14th-ranked Carson-Newman women's soccer team (16-2) became the number-one team in the Southeast region after finishing the regular season with a 2-0 record with wins over regionally-ranked Tusculum and Coker.

The top six teams make the NCAA Division II Playoffs from the South Atlantic Conference, Peach Belt and Conference Carolinas with each conference champion clinching an automatic qualifying bid. The SAC leads the way with five teams represented in the top-10.

After sitting atop of the standings last week, the Columbus State Cougars fell to third allowing Carson-Newman and Wingate to move up a spot. Wingate knocked off Barton and played a scoreless draw against Tusculum last Friday.

Columbus State picked up two clean sheets against Montevallo and North Carolina – Pembroke and scored a combined nine goals. North Georgia flipped spots with Armstrong as the Nighthawks moved to fourth with wins over Lander and South Carolina – Aiken. The Pirates drew 1-1 with Lander and knocked off Flagler 2-1.

Conference Carolinas' regular season champions, the Belmont Abbey Crusaders, remained in sixth with a record of 14-2-1. The Crusaders beat North Greenville 4-0 on Wednesday and then held off Limestone 2-1 in the Conference Carolinas regular season championship. The SAC's Queens (N.C.) Royals jumped from eighth to seventh with a 2-0 win over Brevard last Saturday. Lenoir-Rhyne moved up one spot to eighth after a win over Newberry on Halloween.

The Anderson (S.C.) Trojans knocked off Mars Hill 2-1 on a late goal, but the Trojans fell from seventh to ninth in the rankings. Debutant Tusculum replaced Limestone as the 10th-ranked team in the Southeast region at a record of 9-7-2; the Pioneers' season ended on Tuesday night after a 4-0 loss to Queens.

Carson-Newman's next contest will be Friday night at 5 p.m. against ninth-ranked Anderson in the SAC Tournament quarterfinals at Manchester Meadow in Rock Hill, S.C. The Field of 48 will be released on Monday night at 6:30 p.m.
