Must-win scenario for C-N at Tusculum

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (5-6-3, 2-5-3 SAC) and Tusculum (4-10-1, 2-7-1 SAC) collide on Wednesday evening at Pioneer field in what is a must-win scenario for both sides.

Carson-Newman's final regular season contest of the 2024 season is a must-win to keep the season alive and qualify for the South Atlantic Conference tournament. Entering the regular season finale, C-N is in ninth place, one point back of Emory & Henry and two points back of seventh-place Limestone. The Eagles lost to E&H earlier in the year, so they lose the tiebreaker with the Wasps, making it a must-win game. C-N does not benefit from a tie or loss. If Carson-Newman wins, it would need Limestone OR Emory & Henry to lose their match on Wednesday. The Wasps take on Lincoln Memorial while the Saints travel to Mars Hill.

Sophomore defender Karli Pettitt leads Carson-Newman's offense with four goals this season. Felicia Frick follows Pettitt's lead with three goals, two of which have been penalty kick goals. Anita Arnadottir, Selina Jud, Krista Nielsen and Savannah Fields are all multi-goal scorers with Pettitt this season, each having two. Eight different players have scored a goal this season. Four others, that have not scored a goal, have assisted on a goal. 12 different players that have recorded a point this season.

Carson-Newman has the series lead all-time with the Pioneers 22-18-3. Last season's win in Jefferson City marked one of the best comeback victories in program history, as the Eagles overcame an early two-goal deficit and scored three times in nine minutes to seal a one-goal win at McCown Field. The win served as the first time in more than 15 years that Carson-Newman won a game when down by two goals. Molly Zander, Felicia Frick and Selina Jud all scored in the first 14 minutes of the second half to complete the come from behind effort.

The Eagles are currently on a six-match unbeaten streak against the Pioneers and are 5-0-1 during this stretch. C-N's last loss in Greeneville came in 2013. It is unbeaten in its past five trips to Pioneer field.

Despite a 2-7-1 mark in SAC play, Tusculum enters the regular season finale with an outside chance to still quality for the conference tournament. The Pioneers would need to win and root for an Emory & Henry loss AND a Newberry tie or loss.

TU is 4-10-1 overall this season and has just one win at home. The lone home victory came back on September 14th versus Shaw, a 3-2 victory that brought the Pioneers to a 2-2 mark. It went six straight games without a victory before getting back in the win column on Oct 16th with a 2-1 win at Emory & Henry. The Pioneers concluded October with a 5-0 shutout win over Mars Hill. Last time out, TU took an early lead with a 13th minute goal versus #9 Lenoir-Rhyne but allowed goals in the 48th and 77th minutes to fall by just one goal.

Seven of Tusculum's ten losses this season have come by one goal including four of its last five losses. TU has lost four straight home games and dating back to last season, has won just one over its last nine in Greeneville.

Addison Rishling has the fifth-most goals in the conference with seven this season. Five of her seven goals have come in league play this season. Sydney Grant has also been a solid contributor with four goals and five assists this season. It is a Pioneer offense that averages 1.4 goals per game and is the second most accurate team in the league with 54 percent of their shots hitting the target.

Angel Chase has been terrific in goal this season. She has a league-high 80 saves and has the third best save percentage in the SAC at .816.
