JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (5-4-2, 2-3-2 SAC) will aim to get back in the winning column when it welcomes Newberry (6-4-2, 1-4-2 SAC) to the banks of Mossy Creek for a 1:00 p.m. start on Wednesday afternoon.
The Eagles enter the match on their first multi-game losing streak of the season, having lost their past two matches by a 1-0 tally. It's just the fourth time in eight seasons under Simon Duffy that his teams have lost multiple games in a row.
Carson-Newman has been excellent at home this season. The Eagles are 4-1 at McCown Field, with the lone loss coming last time out against Lincoln Memorial. In Simon Duffy's tenure, C-N is an astounding 46-14-6 along the banks of Mossy Creek.
Sophomore defender Karli Pettitt (Kingston, Tenn.) leads Carson-Newman's offense with four goals this season. Anita Arnadottir (Alftanes, Iceland), Selina Jud (Wilderswil, Switzerland), Krista Nielsen (Saudarkrokur, Iceland) and Savannah Fields (Johnson City, Tenn.) are all multi-goal scorers with Pettitt this season, each having two. Eight different players have scored a goal this season. Four others, that have not scored a goal, have assisted on a goal. 12 different players that have recorded a point this season.
Carson-Newman has been strong in South Atlantic Conference play under Duffy. The 8th year head coach has posted a 50-18-9 record against the league since taking over in 2017. Currently, the Eagles are eighth in the league with eight points, going 2-3-2 so far this conference season. C-N is only two points out of fifth place Coker and Limestone who have ten points.
C-N has been dominant against Newberry, winning the past nine meetings in the series. Despite having a winning streak that dates all the way back to 2015, five of the nine wins have only been decided by one goal, including the four most recent matchups. During this nine-match winning streak, the Eagles have outscored the Wolves 20-6. In a series without a tie, Carson-Newman holds the 24-6 advantage.
Newberry enters Wednesday afternoon's match 6-4-2 overall and 1-4-2 in South Atlantic Conference action. DeeDee Alexander's team got off to an excellent start, going an unbeaten 5-0-1 in their first six contests for the first time in school history.
October has been a different story. The Wolves lost four consecutive matches to begin the month, getting outscored 11-2. The losing streak ended with a 1-1 tie versus Coker one week ago, which was followed by a 9-0 road win against Allen this past Friday.
The Wolves have one of the top offenses in the South Atlantic Conference. They average nearly two goals per match, the fourth-best mark in the league. Bella Gonzalez has a team-high five goals to lead the team with ten points. Becca Lipp and Lillian Miller each have four goals and Kristy Cameron also joins in as a multi-goal scorer with three. In total, 11 different players have scored a goal this season.
Emily Castaneda is second in the SAC with six assists. Three of her six assists came in a season-opening win versus Shorter. Two others also have multiple assists for an offense that ranks fifth in total assists.
Aubrey Cripe and Sarah Waller have split time in goal for Newberry this season. Cripe has two extra starts and has played more minutes, but Waller has 30 saves and 0.94 goals against average mark. Waller leads the SAC with a .844 save percentage and has allowed a league-low five goals in her near 500 minutes as a goalie. Defensively, the Wolves have posted six shutouts in 12 games, the second-highest shutout percentage in the SAC.
