VIDEO: Carson-Newman vs Trevecca Nazarene Sept. 2021 Highlights
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman hits the road for the second time this season as it travels to Nashville for a matchup against Trevecca Nazarene tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
"I would like for us to continue on from where we left off against King," Carson-Newman women's soccer head coach Simon Duffy said. "Continue to build confidence, get some minutes under the legs of some of the players and continue to work on our match fitness before we open up conference play to a Catawba that we are very familiar with. We're focused for Saturday. Hopefully we can head down to Nashville and play on the front foot like we did today and put a few in the back of the net."
Carson-Newman is coming off a pair of home wins, defeating Union 4-1 on Saturday and King 2-0 on Wednesday. It's just the third time the program has won its first two home games at McCown Field under Duffy and the first since 2018.
Riding a two-game winning streak, C-N will look to add to it. The Eagles have managed to put together at least a three-game winning streak in eight of the past nine seasons.
The Eagles will hope to ride that momentum built at home, to its upcoming road trip. Under Duffy, C-N is 30-13-6 away from Mossy Creek and is coming off a 2023 season where it finished 4-2-2 on the road.
Sophomore defender Karli Pettitt (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) scored for the second straight game when she rocketed a shot into the upper left side of goal to start the scoring on Wednesday. She leads the team with two goals and has three in her career, all of which have been scored at McCown Field. Also scoring on Wednesday was Molly Bukiewicz (Beavercreek, Ohio), for the first time in her career. Iris Palsdottir was credited with the assist, the first of her C-N career as well.
After two more goals on Wednesday, C-N is now 67-2-3 when scoring two goals or more. Under Duffy, the Eagles are 32-1-2 when leading at the half, and an impressive 46-4-5 when scoring the first goal.
In a series that is evenly split 2-2-2, it is the same for how both teams have fared at home and on the road. C-N is 1-1-1 against the Trojans at home and 1-1-1 when travelling to Nashville. The most recent meeting came on September 11, 2021, a game that featured one goal from each side. Each win in the series has seen the winning team score multiple goals. Carson-Newman's last trip to Nashville was in 2016, a 3-1 Eagles victory.
The Trojans enter play with a 1-1 start to the year. They scored early in the first half and early in the second half to take down Young Harris in the season opener 2-0. It was followed by a 2-0 loss on Thursday night to Kentucky Wesleyan. TNU could not recover from allowing two early first half goals in the loss.
Trevecca Nazarene was picked to finish ninth out of 13 teams in the 2024 Gulf South Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. This ranking comes in what will be the Trojans' first season in the GSC. The team finished 2023 6-7-5, competing in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
A trio of Trojans earned recognition on the league's newcomer watchlist. Transfers Jordan Hellman and Maria Luiza Rocha in addition to freshman Tatum Mendel.
Head coach Nathan Harrell is back for his second season at Trevecca after spending the previous six years as the head coach at Emmanuel College.
Jordan Hellman and Allie Windom have the goals for TNU this season, but eight different players have registered multiple shots in the first two games of the season.
Tomorrow's match will serve as the last non-conference contest for both teams before beginning conference play.
The match is set for a 4:00 p.m. eastern time start from the Trojan Soccer Complex. A live stream of the game is available with a subscription to FloSports.
