Eagles prepare for battle with Coker Thursday

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman women's tennis (4-1, 1-0 SAC) will look to build upon early SAC success when they travel to Hartsville, S.C. Thursday. The opponent, the Coker Cobras (0-4, 0-1 SAC), will be looking to end Carson-Newman's two-match winning streak and gain a valuable conference win.

The Eagles started South Atlantic Conference play last weekend as they traveled to face the Limestone Saints in Gaffney, S.C. Head coach Jim Frederick stated "the girls were in control of the match from start to finish," as C-N won 5-2 overall. Their best player, junior Ana Carla Resende  (Minas Gerais, Brazil), was able to help the Eagles maintain their lead throughout the day. She and senior teammate Abby Reis (Des Moines, IA) came away with a 6-2 victory at no. 1 doubles for only the second time this season and first since February 13th against Belmont Abbey.

"Ana Carla won a very tough match even though she did not play her best," Frederick said. "Even with Resende not always being able to pull out wins, we still have made the most of our opportunities and won tough matches against opponents such as Lee."

Resende continued her impressive conference start as she chalked up another victory at no. 1 singles (6-4, 7-6). Resende is now 24-7 all-time in her Eagles career when playing at number 1 singles.

Thursday marks the first time the Eagles and Cobras face off since March 2019 when C-N left Hartsville with a 5-2 triumph.

Coker went 5-4 (0-2 SAC) in 2019 including winning three of their first four matches of the season prior to the COVID stoppage. They will be playing in their sixth overall match on Thursday after being swept by #13 Queens last Saturday 7-0.

Opening serve from the Coker Tennis Courts is set for 1:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon between the Cobras and the Eagles.
