Eagles travel to Gaffney for SAC opener with Limestone

Video: Jim Frederick Interview

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – For the first time in 2021, Carson-Newman women's tennis will leave the Volunteer State and start action against South Atlantic Conference opposition. The Eagles (3-1, 0-0 SAC) begin conference competition on Saturday with a trip to Gaffney, S.C. for a battle with the Limestone Saints (2-1, 0-0 SAC).

The Eagles were 4-3 victors on Wednesday against the Lee Flames from Cleveland, Tenn. Senior Hannah Price (Knoxville, Tenn.) got back to her winning ways on the season as she won both her singles and doubles matches. Price and teammate Natasha Forrest (Jersey, United Kingdom) will look to continue pushing the Eagles forward in hopes of starting SAC action 2-0 for this weekend.

"For our women's team to be competing so well without having our number one player competing at her highest level is quite impressive. Once we have her playing at her best, this team will be a top competitor," head coach Jim Frederick said. "I think it also shows our depth as we have a freshman playing in four of the six singles positions."

This marks the first time the Eagles and Saints will battle since October 2013 when Carson-Newman defeated Limestone by a score of 5-0 from Hickory, N.C. Last season, the Saints went 2-4, ending the season with a pair of Conference Carolinas victories over King (7-0) and Converse (4-3). Saturday will be the fourth 2021 match for Limestone, coming off a Feb. 23rd battle with Southern Wesleyan which ended up with a 5-2 Saints victory.

"This team is led by two seniors in Hannah Price and Abby Reis who are great team leaders. The whole team comes together and I think they're excited for Conference play to get started," Frederick said. "This weekend will be like any other where we need to have the same mindset of going out there and competing every single match and for every single point."

Opening serve from the Emmie Evans Rector Tennis Center is set for 2:00 p.m. against the Saints. Be sure to keep up with all things Carson-Newman tennis on cneagles.com and via all social media accounts.
