Eagles see exhibition fall to Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman women's tennis (6-3, 2-1 SAC) faced their second Division I opponent for the 2021 season. The Eagles faced Austin Peay in Knoxville earlier in the season and saw an exhibition with Belmont (3-4, 0-0 OVC) on Saturday from Nashville, Tenn.

Doubles was a slight success for Carson-Newman as junior Ana Carla Resende (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and senior Abby Reis (Des Moines, IA) were the only Eagle victors by a score of 6-3. This makes them the most successful Eagles double pairing on the 2021 season. In the other doubles matches, both Eagles pairs fell 6-4 at number two doubles, and 7-6 at number three doubles.

Singles was almost the exact result for Carson-Newman as a whole. Resende saw another victory at number one singles Saturday. She won 6-0, 6-2 which puts her at 24-8 as an Eagle for her career. The Eagles saw a pair of three-set thrillers in number two and four singles. Freshman Violetta Khisamova (Yaroslavl, Russia) saw a 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 result go the way of her Bruins opponent in Lee. Fellow freshman Summer Reeves (Maidstone, Kent, England) has been a steady force at number four singles. Saturday was another successful effort for Reeves, but she could not pull out victory as her Belmont opponent claimed a 6-0, 6-1, 6-1.

For senior Hannah Price (Knoxville, Tenn.), her match at number three singles finished 6-3, 6-4 in her opponent's favor. Price stays 8-1 on the year at number three singles to lead the team in that regard.

At number five and six singles, the matches were deemed "unfinished" as Belmont had already claimed the victory, leaving the court as 4-1 victors.

Carson-Newman returns to SAC action next week with a short trek to Harrogate, Tenn. on March 17th to face the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters.
