Eagles silence Cobras for second straight SAC win

Final Box Score

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – For the second consecutive match, Carson-Newman women's tennis (5-1, 2-0 SAC) have not only defeated their opponent but won by at least a 3-match margin. Thursday saw C-N sweep the Coker Cobras (0-5, 0-2 SAC) by a team score of 7-0 from the Coker Tennis Courts.

Freshman Summer Reeves (Maidstone, Kent, England) led the Eagles with her sixth consecutive singles victory from the number four slot, while the Eagles barely trailed in any match against the Cobras.

The day started off with Carson-Newman taking all three doubles matches. For the first time this season, senior Hannah Price (Knoxville, Tenn.) and sophomore Natasha Forrest (Jersey, United Kingdom) paired up from the number 2 doubles slot. Both athletes have seen success from doubles all season, so it was no surprise that the duo came away victors by the score of 6-2.

The number one doubles pairing was junior Ana Carla Resende (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and senior Abby Reis (Des Moines, IA). They saw their second consecutive win at number one singles in SAC play while third overall win from the number one slot. Number three doubles matched up a pair of freshmen in Julia Speiser and Reeves. The pair swept their opponent clean by a 6-0 margin.

The quartet of Resende, Price, Reeves, and Speiser collect another valuable singles victory in conference play as they have all gone a combined 8-0 in action the past two matches. Resende, the number one position, swept her Cobra opposition 6-0, 6-0 after seeing a 6-4, 7-6 gain against the Limestone Saints last Saturday. She is now an overall 24-9 when playing at the number one singles slot for her Eagles career.

Freshman play has been a crucial part to the depth of this year's Eagles squads as they have had a trio of freshman playing anywhere from number two to number six singles every match this year. Thursday saw freshman Violetta Khisamova (Yaroslavl, Russia) pick up her third career singles victory from number two singles. On the same wavelength, Speiser has only missed two matches all season and when she is active, she holds one blemish to her record (4-1).

Meanwhile, Price has been a spark to the Eagles as she has only lost one singles match all year, now standing at 6-1 for the 2021 season. Her lone loss came back on Feb. 20, 2021 when the Eagles faced the Austin Peay Governors in Knoxville.

The Eagles will be back in action this weekend as they travel for battles with North Georgia on Saturday and Young Harris on Sunday. Both days are slated to start at 2:00 p.m. for first serve.
