Eagles tussle with Trojans in home opener

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – It has been a long time coming, but Carson-Newman women's tennis get to play at home for the first time in 2021 Tuesday. The Eagles (6-2, 2-0 SAC) play host to the Anderson Trojans (2-2, 1-2 SAC) who are looking for their first matchup win in three years.

Carson-Newman aims to start conference play 3-0 for the first time in program history and match their best spring start through nine matches since the 2015-16 season which they started 7-2 overall. The Eagles have gone 2-1 to start conference play five separate times, most recently to begin the 2018-19 SAC campaign. With a win, C-N also secures their second straight series victory.

Last week saw the Eagles in action three days as they were on the road to face the Coker Cobras, the North Georgia Nighthawks, and the Young Harris Mountain Lions. Of the three matches, C-N was able to secure not one, but TWO sweeps of opponents (Coker and Young Harris) to make their season mark currently 6-2.

Against Coker, Carson-Newman saw only one singles match go to three sets with freshman Violeta Khisamova (Yaroslavl, Russia) picking up the nail-biting win 0-6, 6-3, 7-5 to make sure the Eagles swept and gained another SAC win. The Eagles could not repeat success on Saturday as they only were able to claim one singles match by junior Ana Carla Resende (Minas Grecias, Brazil) along with the doubles point.

Sunday's matchup with Young Harris had no doubt about it as the Eagles came out strong and never gave up a lead. All singles matches went no longer than two sets and the closest margin was freshman Summer Reeves (Maidstone, Kent, England) who matched her opponent point-for-point but took the final score by a margin of 7-5, 7-5.

The Eagles and Trojans last faced off in April of 2019 when the Eagles kept their home court advantage to win 5-2 and beat Anderson for the first time since 2016.

Last season, the Trojans finished 12-3 (1-2 SAC) ending the season with three straight wins over Young Harris, Tusculum, and Augusta. Their last action for this season came on March 5 as they fell to the Limestone Saints 4-3.

Opening serve from the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex is slated for 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Be sure to keep up with all things Carson-Newman women's tennis at cneagles.com and on social media.
