Eagles drop season opener to Young Harris

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- The Young Harris Mountain Lions gave the Carson-Newman men's tennis team just about all they could handle in a 7-2 loss Saturday afternoon as the Mountain Lions swept the Eagles in singles play.

"I really loved the effort and energy we gave today in our Singles matches," tennis coach Jean Love said. "We just weren't quite good enough to win any today, but there are some things we can get better at and build on."

Juan Sebastian Perez (Ecaudor) and Kevin Mendes (Woodstock, Ga.) forced tiebreakers in the second set of their singles matches, but both ended coming up short 7-6 (6) and 7-5 (5) respectively. The rest of the singles matches never came within two points.

One bright spot of the afternoon would be the Eagles' doubles teams that generated the two points in the match.  Perez and Mendes teamed together to defeat a Young Harris team 8-3, while Joao Pedro Oliveira (Brazil) and Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) celebrated an 8-5 victory.

"We just have to maintain our focus and continue to be faithful in playing with one another in order to be successful," Love said of her doubles teams.

Carson-Newman returns to the courts to face the Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands next Friday at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.
