Eagles fall 8-1 to Trojans Monday afternoon

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men's tennis team (1-4, 1-2) had its hands full as they welcomed the Anderson University Trojans (8-2, 5-1) into Mossy Creek. The Eagles fell to the Trojans 8-1 and forfeited a chance at a second straight conference victory.

"We gave good effort but need to play better on the big points," coach Love said.

The Eagles fell behind early, losing two of their first three doubles matches. Sophomore J.P. Oliveira (Brazil) and senior Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn) answered back quickly winning the No. 3 doubles match by way of the score 8-2. That was all the Eagles could muster on the day as they were held winless for the remainder of the contest.

Although Carson-Newman failed to win a singles match, two of the six players forced a third set. Mackay, as well as freshman Kevin Mendes (Woodstock, Ga), also forced set one tiebreakers.

Love knows where her team stands and what needs to be worked on, however, gives credit to the opponent for a competitive match. "Credit goes out to Anderson for winning the big points, stealing the momentum, and winning the match handily," Love said.

The Eagles will hit the road on Wednesday, as they travel to Tigerville, S.C. to take on North Greeneville University at 2 p.m.
