Big matches with Newberry and Queens await Eagles

Austin Mackay Interview

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn — After the threat of rain forced Tennessee Wesleyan College to postpone Thursday's match against Carson-Newman, the Eagles (3-5, 2-3 SAC) will return home to host two South Atlantic Conference matches this weekend.

The Newberry Wolves (8-7, 2-4 SAC) comes to Mossy Creek on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. start and Queens (7-1, 2-1) will follow on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Coach Jean Loves knows the importance this weekend holds.

"The matches are big for us as we continue to improve and strive to make the tournament this season," Love said.

Newberry currently resides ninth in the SAC standings, but are 3-0 on the road this season. They are experiencing a two match-losing skid after falling to both Wingate and Anderson 6-3 earlier this week. The Wolves handled Carson-Newman rather easily in their previous matchup as they bested the Eagles in a 7-2 advantage back in 2014.

Queens is presently sitting in fourth place in the SAC, despite only one conference loss. They are coming off a big conference win, too, as they beat the second place team Wingate 6-3 this past week. The Eagles will look to slow down preseason all-conference selection Per-Erik Soler in singles play, as the junior owns a 9-6 record thus far. They also will have to look out for the doubles pairing of Will Roberson and Ole-Jacob Meum and their 10-3 record.

Doubles play will be huge for the Eagles going into the weekend. Every victory Carson-Newman has experienced this season has come with at least two victories in doubles to begin the day. This stat is largely in part due to the efforts of Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn) and Joao Pedro Oliveira (Brazil), as well as Kevin Mendes (Woodstock, Ga) and Juan Sebastian Perez (Ecuador). These two teams have been credited with a 13-3 record to date thus far into the season.
