Trip to Palmetto State next on the docket for Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman men's tennis team (3-8, 2-6) will look to get back into the win column on Friday, as they travel to Hartsville, S.C. to face the Coker Cobras (4-11, 2-4) in a South Atlantic Conference matchup at 10:30 a.m.

"The men just need to stay focused and work on playing percentage tennis," coach Jean Love said. "We really have not played poorly this season.  We have been in several close matches, some we have won and some we have lost."

The Eagles, who are sitting at 10th in the SAC, are currently riding a four match-losing streak and are coming off a hard fought 6-3 loss at Tusculum on Tuesday.

The Coker match will be a good opportunity for Carson-Newman as they have a chance to gain ground on a team that is ahead of them in the SAC standings. The Cobras, who are eighth, are also coming off a defeat to the Pioneers that took place on Saturday; Tusculum won the match 8-1.

Mark Watt leads the way on this Coker team with a singles record of 9-4.

The Eagles, who account for only three victories on the year, have played good tennis this but have not come through in gaining match points. This is a critical room for improvement that coach Love has been adamant about all season.

"We must figure out a way to seize on the opportunities to win the big points in our matches," Love said. "We just need to focus on the process of competing."
