Eagles pick up third SAC win in convincing fashion over Lenior-Rhyne

HICKORY, NC.-- After Friday's contest against Lincoln Memorial was pushed to Sunday because of the threat of rain, the Carson-Newman men's tennis team (4-10, 3-7 SAC) soared into North Carolina and snapped its seven match losing steak with a 7-2 win over  Lenior-Rhyne (9-12, 2-7 SAC) 7-2 Saturday afternoon.

This was their first win in three weeks of play.

"Great win for the guys," coach Jean Love said following the match. "They have given good effort all year long."

The Eagles started off hot as they took two of the three matches in doubles play. Kevin Mendes (Woodstock, Ga.) teamed up with Juan Sebastian Perez (Ecuador) to win the second round match 8-7. Joao Pedro Oliveira (Brazil) and Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) followed up with an 8-1 victory at No. 3.

The momentum carried over into singles play as Carson-Newman came out on top in all but one match.

Oliveira started things off with a 6-4, 6-3 win and watched Perez dominate at No. 3 in a 6-1 route in two sets. Mackay then came through with a 4-6, 6-2, and 6-1 victory at No. 4.

Mendes and Garret Duron (Woodstock, Ga.) finished the day strong for the Eagles. Mendes won in impressive fashion at No. 5, 6-1 and 7-5. Durron capitalized off some big tie breakers as he won the last match of the day 6-7(3), 6-2, and (10-5).

Carson-Newman will look to continue their winning ways Sunday as it looks for string back-to-back wins for the first time in the 2015 season against Lincoln Memorial at 1:30 p.m. The program will honor seniors Duron and Mackay during Senior Day festivies.
