Eagles drop SAC finale 7-2 to Railsplitters

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman men's tennis team (4-11, 3-8 SAC) could not string together two straight wins as the Eagles fell in their final South Atlantic Conference match of the season in a 7-2 route from Lincoln Memorial (7-6, 6-4 SAC).

"Another tough match for the guys," coach Jean Love said after the loss. "We had several close matches but just couldn't find a way to win. I just love the effort though."

Austin Mackay (Oak Ridge, Tenn) and Joao Pedro Oliviera (Brazil) got the Eagles on the board first after their 8-3 win in the No. 3 doubles match. The Carson-Newman duo was the only doubles team to win on the day.

Singles play continued to stay favorable for the Railsplitters, as they only needed two sets for the majority of the five matches they won in the frame.

Juan Sebastian Perez (Ecuador) came up short in the second place match, losing 6-3 and 7-6. Stefano Daza (Venezuela) followed suit with a 6-7, 6-0, and 6-4 loss at No. 3. Mackay was then put away at No. 4, 6-2 and 6-2.

Kevin Mendes (Woodstock, Ga.) fought hard in set two, but ultimately fell 6-2 and 7-6 in the fifth round match. Garret Duron (Woodstock, Ga.) then rounded out the day for the Eagles as he lost 6-2 and 7-6 as well in the final match of the day.

Carson-Newman's lone singles victory for the day came from Oliveira in the leadoff spot. He put down his competition in quick fashion, as he cruised to a 6-3 and 6-1 win.

Seniors Mackay and Duron were honored prior to the start of the match for their years spent here in Mossy Creek.

"This was the last conference match for the seniors Garret Duron and Austin Mackay," Love said. "They have lived and breathed Carson-Newman for four years. I'm so glad to have been their coach."

The Eagles will be at it again on Tuesday as they travel to King University for a 2 p.m. start time.
