Eagles venture to Greeneville for showdown with Pioneers

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman men's tennis team (3-7, 2-5) will aim to end their current three match-losing skid as they travel to South Atlantic Conference rival Tusculum (12-1, 5-1 SAC) Tuesday for a 1 p.m. serve time.

"Another tough conference match for the men," coach Jean Love said. "We are in a tough stretch of matches right now and are playing well, but just not capitalizing on the opportunities we get."

The Pioneers, who are currently third in the conference, have only one loss on the season. The lone loss came from the hands of SAC foe Wingate, who also only has one loss on the year. Anderson is narrowly leading the pack of one loss teams as the three-headed monster are all aiming for a conference title.

Tusculum, the preseason number one pick, boasts a plethora of all-conference selections prior to the season. Headlined by 2014 SAC Player of the Year, Lukas Winkleman, the Pioneers are responsible for five of the selections overall.

Winkleman picked up right where he left off a season ago. The senior is currently perfect so far, showcasing a 12-0 record in singles play. Brother Jonas Winkleman is not far behind, as he is 10-3 thus far into the season. Nicolas Plenchard has also created a lot of buzz this year, as he is currently 11-2 on the season.

The Winkleman brothers also highlighted the preseason doubles selections for the SAC. The duo has a flawless 12-0 record on the year. Tashique Kadar and Leon Seiz round out the preseason selections as they were also picked for a doubles team. The twosome is a respectable 9-2 this season.

"When you play good competition, it can be a matter of a few points between winning and losing," Love said. "So Tusculum is another opportunity to get better and win those big points."

Carson-Newman will have their hands full when Tusculum coach and Carson-Newman alumni Tommy Arnett welcome the Eagles into Greeneville. The continuation of good doubles play will be key for the Eagles, however, singles players must generate more wins on Tuesday or Carson-Newman will be on an uphill battle all day.
