Eagles Close Out February with Trip to Cleveland, Tenn.

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman men's tennis (2-4) heads to Cleveland, Tenn., to take on the Lee Flames (6-0) on Tuesday, Feb. 28th.

Carson-Newman began the season with a dominant 6-1 victory over #25 Belmont Abbey. The Eagles fell into a four-game losing slump after matches against #11 North Georgia, #13 Lander, Tennessee Wesleyan, and Young Harris. The Eagles snapped their losing streak with a 6-1 win over Union College (Ky.).

Marnix Van Dalen and Gjorgji Jankulovski lead the Eagles in wins so far this year. Both players hold a record of 4-2. Van Dalen has primarily played in the two position. Jankulovski has bounced between the three and the four spots.

Marc Janse holds a 3-3 record for the Eagles. All three of his wins were earned in the one spot. Waterbolk and Hordijk each have two wins so far, and Javier Crespo Sanchez rounds out the singles wins column with a solo victory recorded against Belmont Abbey.

Rintaro Oka and Janse lead the Eagles in doubles wins this year. The pair has collected a record of 3-3 on the year. The pairings of Van Dalen/Hordijk, Jankulovski/Waterbolk, Hordijk/Waterbolk, and Jankulovski/Crespo Sanchez each have earned a single win on the year.

The Flames have recorded six consecutive wins to start the year. They began the year with a 7-0 victory over Milligan University, then traveled to Greeneville, Tenn., to beat Tusculum 5-2. They went on to win 7-0 against Shorter University before a 4-3 win over #8 University of West Florida. Their most recent win was against King University (Tenn.), where they won 7-0.

Carson-Newman holds a 2-5 record against Lee. The Flames won their most recent matchup against the Eagles with a score of 4-3 on Feb. 26th of last year. Carson-Newman's last win against the Flames came on Feb. 1st of, 2020, when the Eagles squeezed out a 4-3 win. Oka, Janse, and Waterbolk are the only Eagles that remain on the roster from their 2020 victory over the Flames.
