Eagles Make Conference Debut in Home opener Against Catawba

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman men's tennis (2-5) returns to the banks of Mossy Creek for their home opener against Catawba College (1-2) on Saturday, Mar. 4th.

"Three conference games in one week is pretty tough, but I think we can make it," men's tennis head coach Felipe Charry said. "I think we will be performing the way that we should."

The Eagle's matchup against the Catawba College Indians is the first conference match of the season. The Blue and Orange finished 8-4 in conference play last season, including a 7-0 victory over Catawba.

The Eagles were ranked 33rd during their matchup against Catawba last season. Carson-Newman won eight out of 14 sets by five or more points. Carson-Newman returned each of the starting six from their matchup with the Indians last season.

Carson-Newman began the year with a 6-1 victory against #25 Belmont Abbey. The Eagles went on to endure a four-game losing streak including losses against #11 North Georgia, #13 Lander, Tennessee Wesleyan, and Young Harris. The Eagles returned to the win column with a 6-1 victory over Union (6-1). Their most recent action was on Feb. 28th against Lee. The Eagles lost 5-2.

Catawba started the season with a 6-1 loss against Mount Olive. They went on to defeat Emory and Henry 5-2. The Indians began conference play with a 4-3 loss against Limestone. Catawba finished last season with a 3-14 record, including 2-10 in conference play.

Janse/Oka holds the most doubles victories with a 3-4 record. This season, Van Dalen/Hordijk and Jankulovski/Waterbolk have a 2-0 record.

"During the last two matches, we changed the doubles lineup, and we won both times," Charry said. "It was a change that I believe we had to do, and that is why those games that we play in February are so important."
