Eagles take on Pioneers in midweek matchup

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team will take on Tusculum on Wednesday afternoon, a match that was rescheduled from March 13.

"Another tough conference match for us this week against Tusculum." Carson-Newman tennis coach Jean Love said, "We have some momentum going into the match after winning our last conference match against Catawba. We are looking forward to the match this week." 

 

Carson-Newman (4-5, 3-2) is coming off a weekend split against Wingate and Catawba. The Eagles were shutout against Wingate on Friday afternoon, but bounced back against Catawba for an 8-1 victory. Tusculum (10-3, 5-0) is currently riding a seven match win streak with notable wins against No. 35 Northwood and Palm Beach Atlantic. The Eagles lost 8-1 to Palm Beach Atlantic earlier this season.

 

Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) will look to rebound at the No. 1 singles position after losing both of her matches this past weekend against Wingate and Catawba. Last season Harris defeated Kealee Heffner in three sets at No. 1 singles.

 

Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) started her first match of the season at No. 3 singles on Sunday afternoon against Catawba. The junior moves to 4-5 on the season and 2-3 in conference play. Last season against Tusculum Corsato-Owsianka defeated Erin Mills in three sets.

 

Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) got the start at No.2 singles for the first time on Sunday afternoon. The freshman won her match helping her improve to 5-4 on the season. Fellow freshman Klara Vuckovic (Germany) and Lindy Tatum (Henderson, Tenn.) are finding their own success on the tennis courts at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.

 

Sydney Ledington (Corbin, Ky.) is starting to turn her season around after a win on Sunday afternoon. The junior is now 3-6 on the year and 2-3 in conference play. Ledington did not play last season against Tusculum.

 

In doubles play the Eagles have a very formidable one-two punch at No.1 doubles and No. 2 doubles. The No. 1 doubles pairing of Corsato-Owsianka and Harris is 4-3 on the year, while the No. 2 doubles tandem of Liashova and Vuckovic is 5-2 overall and is 4-1 in conference play.

 

The Pioneers have at least five players with three or more wins in conference play this season. Tusculum is currently in a three-way tie for first place in the South Atlantic Conference standings, with Wingate and Queens.

 

Katarina Majorova is currently on a five match winning streak at No. 1 singles. The freshman has compiled a 7-1 record at the No. 1 singles position, while posting a 4-0 record in conference play.  

 

Franziska Funke is currently on a two match win streak while compiling a 6-2 record at the No. 2 singles position. Last season against Carson-Newman Funke defeated Patricia Guerreiro in three sets to win at No. 2 singles.

 

Annie McCullough is coming in to Wednesday's matchup with the Eagles on a three match winning streak. McCullough is 11-2 overall on the season and is 8-1 at the No. 3 singles position. Africa Mota is 4-2 in the No. 4 singles position, while Brittani Brooks closes out singles play at the No. 6 position with a 6-2 record.

 

In doubles play the Pioneers top tandem of Funke and Majorova have an 11-1 record and are currently on a six match winning streak. The No. 2 doubles duo of Sarah Baker and McCullough are 7-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play.
