Eagles looking to end season on a high-note

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman women's tennis team will attempt to win three consecutive matches for the first time this season, when they face-off against North Georgia at 2 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.

 

"North Georgia is the toughest opponent we will face this season." Carson-Newman tennis coach Jean Love said, "They pose a tremendous challenge for us. This match will be good preparation for us as we get ready to face Queens on Friday. We need to continue to do the things that have helped us so far and to clean up those areas that we are still working on."

 

The Eagles preseason all-conference selections of Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) and Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Germany) have begun to turn it on as of late. Harris is riding a two-match winning streak at the No. 1 singles position. The Tennessee native is 6-9 on the year and is 5-5 within conference play.

 

Corsato-Owsianka has been the most consistent Eagle of late. Since moving down to the No.3 singles position the junior has compiled a 6-1 record and is currently on a five-match winning streak. The native of Germany is 9-6 overall on the year and is 6-4 within conference play.

 

Harris and Corsato-Owsianka are also the Eagles No. 1 doubles pairing. The duo has gone 7-6 this season with a 6-4 mark in conference play.

 

Sydney Ledington (Corbin, Ky.) has turned into the closer the Eagles thought she might be at the No. 6 position. The junior is rolling along with a three-match winning streak to her credit and is 7-8 overall on the year.

 

A trio of freshman round out the rest of the Eagles singles lineup. Alisa Liashova (Ukraine) moved up to No.2 singles mid-way through the season. The native from Ukraine has won back-to-back matches for the second time this season. The freshman is 7-8 overall on the season and is 3-4 at No. 2 singles.

 

Klara Vuckovic (Germany) has won two straight at the No. 4 singles position and is 8-7 overall on the season. Lindy Tatum (Henderson, Tenn.) is 7-8 on the season at the No.5 singles position and is riding a two-match winning streak.

 

The No. 2 doubles tandem of Liashova and Vuckovic are 10-3 on the season and are 8-2 of their last 10 matches. The final doubles pairing is Ledington and Tatum, the duo is currently riding a two-match winning streak and are 4-9 on the year.

 

The Nighthawks of North Georgia have five players with double-digit victories. No. 1 singles player Kathrin Waidner leads the team with an 18-3 record and has won nine straight. Felicia Baratta is 16-3 on the year at No.2 singles and has won four straight.

 

Pair of players have alternated at the No.3 and No.4 singles positions. Holly Bennett is 15-6 on the year, with seven wins coming at both the No.3 and No.4 singles slots. Karina Gurgenyan is 17-4 on the year and has eight wins at each of the No. 3 and No.4 positions.

 

The No. 5 singles player for the Nighthawks is Lexa Loden who is 12-9 on the season. Loden is 9-9 at the No. 5 position. Emma Etelalahti rounds out the starting six with a 6-7 record on the season.

 

In doubles play the Nighthawks have three dominant teams. The No. 1 tandem of Barratta and Waidner are 16-3 on the season and are currently riding a nine match winning streak. The No. 2 doubles tandem of Bennett and Etelalahti are 11-7 on the season, while the final tandem of Gugenyan and Loden are 16-3.
